Construction Updates - Corrections

The Kalmia traffic circle will open on Tuesday, January 28th, not Thursday as previously announced. Please be aware of the temporary signage along Grand Avenue as through traffic is restored between Juniper and Kalmia.

The landscaping teams have begun beautifying the completed areas of Subphases 1 and 2, while crews continue enhancing pedestrian accessibility with sidewalk improvements throughout Subphase 2. 

The final stage, Subphase 3, will stretch from Broadway to Maple and includes construction of the second traffic circle at the Broadway intersection. With the Kalmia traffic circle's opening, Subphase 3 construction will begin immediately. 

Traffic control will be installed on January 28th, with a full closure of Grand Avenue between Kalmia and Maple.  The new traffic control will include the closure of the Broadway and Grand intersection.  Safety considerations for both drivers and pedestrians have necessitated closing traffic and parking in both directions. This accelerated schedule helps minimize potential weather-related delays.

During this closure, detour signs will be posted directing traffic to use Valley Parkway or 2nd Avenue as alternate routes. Broadway is a major north-south throughfare in our City, so we encourage motorists to plan ahead and allow extra travel time during construction.

Construction Details

The Grand Avenue Vision Project is all about preserving Escondido’s historic small-town look and feel while infusing new energy and vibrancy into the heart of Escondido. This exciting initiative aims to transform Grand Avenue into a welcoming and pedestrian-friendly corridor and boost the economic vitality of our downtown area. 

Construction Hours and Details 

Construction will take place Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. During the construction of Phase II, Grand Avenue will be closed to through traffic. However, pedestrian access will remain open to all businesses.  

Free parking is available throughout the duration of the project and can be found using the interactive parking map. Please be sure to observe all traffic control signs and do not move traffic cones or barriers. To help protect public safety, please remain on the designated pedestrian walkways.
